About The Project

A stand-up stage has rules. Find the laugh. Work the room. Trust the rhythm. A movie set has different rules.

For The Breadwinner, Sony Pictures Entertainment came to REMEDY with the seed of a behind-the-scenes concept built around Nate Bargatze stepping into his first feature film role. The piece had a very specific first job: play live on Nate’s Big Dumb Eyes comedy tour before he walked on stage, giving audiences a funny, in-world introduction to the film while they were already there to see him.

Our job was to take that spark and turn it into a fully written mockumentary about what happens when one of the biggest names in stand-up brings his stage instincts to the big screen.

The Ask

Sony needed more than a standard behind-the-scenes piece.

They needed something fast, clear, and funny enough to work in a live comedy setting, while still introducing audiences to Nate’s role in The Breadwinner. The premise had to land quickly. The story had to build. And the final 90-second cut had to feel entertaining before it ever felt promotional.

Most importantly, it had to feel like Nate.

Writing for a comedian with a voice that specific means you cannot just write “funny.” You have to write in rhythm. His rhythm. His understatement. His timing. His way of letting a joke wander into the room like it got there by accident.

The Solution

We built the mockumentary around one simple idea:

Nate left the stage, but the stage didn’t exactly leave him.

That gave the piece a clear comedic engine. The habits that make him great in front of a live audience start showing up in the wrong environment. What works on stage becomes just a little disruptive on set. The crew is trying to make a movie. Nate is trying to find the laugh. And somewhere in the middle, the whole thing turns into a behind-the-scenes comedy piece with a story of its own.

To get it right, we studied Nate’s stand-up, his pacing, and the shape of his humor. Then we wrote the structure, jokes, interview beats, and visual gags around that voice.

And once we were on set, we held it loosely.

We were filming in small pockets on a live movie set, 10 minutes here, 15 minutes there, working around cast, crew, and an active feature production. So the writing had to be clear enough to land fast, but flexible enough for professional comedians to make it their own.

That was the fun of it. Sony brought the spark. REMEDY built the spine. Nate, the cast, Sony, and the producers helped give it life.

The Deliverables

REMEDY delivered a hard 90-second cut built for Nate Bargatze’s Big Dumb Eyes tour, an extended cut, and the final behind-the-scenes featurette.

The piece was also used across Sony’s YouTube and social channels, Entertainment Tonight broadcast and online, and additional promotional rollout for The Breadwinner.
